Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 5: New Features and Preview Status
Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 is still in snapshot testing as of 23 October 2026. Snapshot 5 was published on 20 October and adds Packed Ice Bricks. Earlier snapshots in the same series introduced Brittle Ice and Jukebox Playlists, F3 screen changes and a Vulkan graphics setting change. These are experimental pre-release details, not a claim that 26.4 has shipped as a stable release.

Key takeaways
- 26.3 remains the stable Java Edition release covered by this library as of 23 October 2026.
- 26.4 Snapshot 5 was published on 20 October 2026 and introduces Packed Ice Bricks.
- Snapshot 4 introduced Brittle Ice and Jukebox Playlists; Snapshot 2 updated the F3 debug overlay and improved render-distance fog.
- Snapshot 1 changed the Graphics API setting so Default behaves like Prefer Vulkan.
- Do not use snapshots on the only copy of an important world or public production server.
First check the release status
Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 is a work-in-progress snapshot series. The release-changelog index still lists 26.3 as the full stable Java Edition release, while 26.4 entries are listed under Snapshot Information and Changelogs. Feature details can change between snapshots and before the eventual release.
A snapshot may be useful for testing upcoming mechanics or creating preview content, but it should not be labelled simply as “Minecraft 26.4 stable”. Always include the snapshot number and date so players know which build a guide describes.
Snapshot 5: Packed Ice Bricks
Snapshot 5, published on 20 October 2026, adds Packed Ice Bricks crafted from a 2-by-2 pattern of Packed Ice. The family includes Slabs, Stairs, Walls and Chiseled Packed Ice. Several of these variants can also be crafted using a Stonecutter, making the block family more flexible for icy builds and decorative paths.
The same snapshot adds the “What Goes Around Comes Around” Adventure advancement for killing a Frostbite with an Ice Ball. The changelog also adjusts projectile interactions with certain blocks in Adventure Mode worlds, subject to the mobGriefing game rule.
Snapshot 4: Brittle Ice and Jukebox Playlists
Snapshot 4 introduced Brittle Ice, a block found naturally in Ice Caves as part of the crevasse feature. Players or mobs standing on it cause it to crack and eventually break, while the Frostbite mob can walk across it without breaking it. The official notes also describe obtaining it with Silk Touch and creating it when water flows onto Blue Ice.
Jukebox Playlists let players place a Chest, Trapped Chest or Copper Chest variant directly above a Jukebox. Music discs in the chest play in slot order, skip empty slots and non-disc items, and loop back to the start. Removing the current disc skips to the next available disc.
Earlier snapshots: F3 interface, fog and Vulkan
Snapshot 2 changed render-distance fog blending when Improved Transparency is enabled, added a celestial occluder to the Overworld skybox and redesigned the F3 debug overlay to be easier to read. Because the debug screen is often used for coordinates, performance diagnostics and tutorial recordings, interface changes can affect creators and server administrators who rely on familiar layouts.
Snapshot 1 changed the Graphics API setting so Default behaves like Prefer Vulkan, and it altered the game’s behaviour after a startup crash. Graphics support is hardware- and driver-dependent; do not assume a setting that works on one PC will be ideal for every system. Follow the latest snapshot notes and test with your own GPU and drivers.
How to test a snapshot safely
Snapshot worlds and data can change between builds, and worlds opened in a newer experimental version may not be suitable for older stable versions afterward. For a stable new world, start with the Minecraft Java 26.3 guide and the version library.
- Create a separate launcher installation or game directory for snapshots.
- Back up the world and copy it before opening it in a snapshot.
- Do not load the only copy of a production or long-running server world in a test version.
- Check snapshot-specific notes and server-software support before testing multiplayer.
- Keep the exact snapshot number in video titles, bug reports and screenshots.
