VALORANT Competitive Updates: Map Rating and Performance Score Explained

Patch 13.08 added Map Rating and adjusted Performance Score. These tools offer more context for individual map proficiency and match contributions, but they are not a replacement for the visible competitive rank or a guarantee of rank changes after a match.

Key takeaways

  • Map Rating uses a 0–500 scale and a letter grade from C to S.
  • Riot says the rating considers overall win rate, attacker win rate, defender win rate and Performance Score, with newer matches weighted more heavily.
  • Map Rating is available in Competitive and Premier; historical matches did not count at launch.
  • Performance Score adjustments change the impact of damage, adjusted kills and adjusted deaths, including first-blood/first-death context.

What Map Rating measures

Riot describes Map Rating as a map-specific measure on a 0–500 scale with a letter grade from C to S. Its calculation uses Overall Win Rate, Attacker Win Rate, Defender Win Rate and Performance Score, and recent matches contribute more than older ones. It is intended to help a player review proficiency on each map rather than turn one match into a complete evaluation.

Patch 13.08 notes say Map Rating is available in Competitive and Premier. Riot also states that other players cannot see an individual's Map Rating and that historical matches did not count towards the rating at launch. Check official follow-up notes for later behaviour or availability changes.

Map Rating is not the same as rank

A map-specific rating and a displayed competitive rank answer different questions. A player can have a strong history on one map and still lose a match because of opponent strength, team communication, composition, adaptation or match variance. The letter grade should be treated as one review signal, not as a guarantee of rank increase.

Avoid comparing your Map Rating directly to another player's visible rank or claiming the feature reveals matchmaking rules. The full calculation and data visibility are controlled by Riot, and a summary article should not invent hidden formula weights or penalties.

Performance Score changes

Patch 13.08 further adjusted Performance Score after changes in 13.06. Riot increased the impact of Damage, Adjusted Kills and Adjusted Deaths, with the adjusted measures considering First Bloods and First Deaths. Chamber-specific adjustments were also made to better account for utility usage.

The practical takeaway is to review several parts of a match instead of looking only at final kills. Damage output, opening engagements, deaths, utility value and team role can all help explain why a round went well or badly. The score is an internal evaluation tool; it does not replace round wins or official competitive rules.

A useful post-match review

The VALORANT Patch 13.08 article provides the broader release context. The agent update guide and map update guide cover related patch categories.

  • Look at Map Rating over a meaningful number of games, not a single result.
  • Review attack and defence separately if the map splits rounds by side.
  • Identify repeated early deaths, wasted utility or failed trade setups.
  • Write down one change to test next time instead of changing every setting.
  • Use the official Riot notes if a formula, grade scale or display changes.
